Measurement

Measuring Considerations

  • Never assume two windows are identical
  • Always use a lineal steel tape measure
  • Record measurements in inches
  • Always record to the nearest 1/8”
  • Order width (first) X height (second)

Test for Squareness
Measure diagonally! (Corner to corner) both measurements must be equal. If these measurements are not within 1/8” tolerance, we suggest you mount the product outside the window opening. Also the depth of the sill or opening will determine if the product can be mounted inside or outside the casing. In addition, consider any obstructions which may project from the opening. The following measuring guides typically apply to all standard window covering products.

Inside Mount (IB)

Note: The depth of the sill will determine if your window covering can be installed inside (IB) or outside (OB) the casing.

Width: Select the narrowest of the three dimensions and order that width.
Height: Select the shortest of the three dimensions and order that height.

Did you know…?
Hold-down brackets installed on the door and secured to the bottom rail will help prevent blind swing-out when door is opened or closed.

Outside Mount (OB)
with casing or trim

Width: Measure from outside left edge to outside right edge of casing/trim molding, order that width.

Height: (Option A with flat casing trim) Measure from the top edge of the casing/trim to the bottom edge of casing/trim and order this height.

Caution: Casing/trim height must be 1-3/4” min. for proper bracket installation.

Height: (Option B with sill) Measure from top edge of casing/trim down to the window sill and order this height.

Outside Mount (OB)
without casing or trim

Width: Select the widest of three dimensions, add 3” for overlap on each side and order that width.

Height: Select the longest dimension. Add 3” (2” to mount and conceal the headrail from exterior view and 1” for bottom rail) and order that height.

Spacer blocks mounted with installation brackets will provide clearance for obstructions (i.e. knobs or window cranks).

Measuring Tips
Tips for Measuring Accuracy
No single aspect of the window coverings business impacts customer satisfaction more than measuring. Accurate measurements are essential.
  • Always use a steel tape measure, preferably ¾' to 1” wide.
  • Measure the width first, then the height. Width is always listed first when you order the window covering. Record measurements in inches and round to the nearest 1/8”.
  • Measure each window separately, even if they appear to be the same size.
  • Examine the window opening for potential trouble spots, such as protruding handles or cranks. In come cases spacer blocks or extension brackets will be ordered.

Inside Mounting Depth
Check specification for the minimum inside mounting depth required. If the window covering cannot be fully recessed, understand that a certain portion will protrude outside the window opening. Be sure to add any extra amount required to clear obstructions to the minimum mounting depth.

Make three measurements for each dimension and record the smallest width x height measurement, rounding down to 1/8”.

Measure the opening on the diagonals. If these dimensions are not exactly the same consider ordering and outside mount for optimal privacy and light control.

Outside Mounting Depth
After measuring desired width and height at the center of the opening, allow for recommended overlap to minimum light gaps.
If the window has molding, be sure your height measurement allows for the mounting of the shade above the molding.

To determine if your opening is square, measure diagonally,
if measurements differ more than 1/4”, an Outside
Mount installation is recommended.
